What Is Abilene Known For?

Abilene was originally established by cattlemen as a shipping point for their stock on the Texas and Pacific Railway. It was named after Abilene, Kansas, which was the original end of the Chisholm Trail, and i is home to three universities: Hardin-Simmons University, Abilene Christian University, and McMurry University. Abilene is also home to Dyess Air Force Base, which is the city’s largest employer.

1. Abilene Zoological Park

There is always something fun to see and do at Abilene Zoo! The zoo is home to more than 1,000 animals from around the world, and it opportunities to get up close and personal with many of them. 2. National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature

This is one museum you don’t want to miss. It collects, preserves, and promotes original artwork from some of the finest examples of children’s literature. There are works from many different artists on display, so make sure to schedule plenty of time to view everything. Don’t forget to check out the children’s art activities, which the museum creates to promote, encourage, and inspire art in children.

3. 12th Armored Museum

The 12th Armored Museum was created to serve as both a display and teaching museum of World War II. Their collection features archives, memorabilia, oral histories, equipment, and other materials on loan. They hope to use their museum as an opportunity to not only preserve the history of the 12th Armored Division, but also teach history in a hands-on environment.
